A Week for the Little Things…

This post is not so much informative or philosophical as it is reflective.  Just finally winding down after several busy days.

I sat down at my computer with the intent of slapping together some separate pages for content that I have coming (nutrition, warm ups, injuries, etc.), but I figured I needed to write about my own journeys first.  Continue reading if you feel so inclined…

Tae Kwon Do is one of my most beloved pastimes.  I’ve been training in it for about 6 1/2 years, and I’ve been an assistant instructor for at least half of that.  For virtually that entire time, I’ve been averaging at least three classes per week and I am thankful for all that I have learned from my training so far.  However, the past month or two have put quite a strain on my ability to train and support the other students the way I’d like to.  Financial troubles, job searches, personal issues… these are all things that come along and interfere with our lives because they demand our attention.

But I think it’s important to remember that we have to take the time when we can to appreciate those routines and hobbies that we consider to be trivial.  While the electric bill, family obligations, and oil changes are all things we have to handle (sometimes with much regret), there is also so much LIFE wrapped up in the little things that we need to appreciate.  I think all of those “important” things begin to suffer if we completely neglect the fun stuff.  Our work suffers.  Our relationships suffer.  Our entire outlook on life can be brought down if we deprive ourselves of those little things that make us happy.

We sometimes get so wrapped up in sacrificing the little things to take care of the big picture, that we forget that the little things ARE the big picture!

I was making this very mistake.  Tonight marks the conclusion of my first full week back in TKD since I had to start leaving town for work about a month and a half ago.  I got to give one of the boys guidance on a test that he took tonight (and passed well, I might add).  I taught roundhouse kicks to our tiniest while belt.  And I got to with my most challenging sparring partner who has been patiently waiting for me to return to class.  So at the moment, I’m sitting in my computer chair covered in bruises, yet I’m smiling.  That’s because after all of the aches and pains subside, the joy that those little things bring will still remain.

If you’ve lost your little things, go and find them again.  You can’t afford not to 🙂

Take care, and thanks for reading
