Hi, my name’s Geoff Futch. I’m from the Lafayette, Louisiana area (in the United States, for all of you foreign folks!), and I finally bit the bullet and started up my own blog. I’m a martial arts practitioner and exercise enthusiast who enjoys digging around to find the truth behind fitness and all of the stuff that we try. I’ve been my own guinea pig in an effort to find out what works, for me. Perhaps more importantly, I study the research and science behind exercise and health to figure out WHY IT WORKS!
Got Some Credentials?
Well if you MUST know…
I am an exercise physiologist by education as well as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist with Distinction (CSCS,*D). I earned my B.S. in Kinesiology with an Exercise Science concentration from U.L. Lafayette, and I received my Master’s Degree in Exercise Science with a focus in Exercise Physiology from Auburn University.
I’m proud to say that I’ve begun work toward my Ph.D. at The University of Texas at Austin. So I’m now a Longhorn, and hopefully I’ll be the proud holder of a research doctorate in a few years! My degree is Exercise Physiology (once again) with an emphasis in Neuromuscular Physiology. I’m currently looking into how nutrition and exercise affect people suffering from spinal cord injuries, neurodegenerative diseases, peripheral neuropathy, and stroke. While it will undoubtedly be an arduous journey, I’m excited to continue my path of ultimate nerdiness!
A Little Background…
As I said before, I hold Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Exercise Science, and I’m now working on my PhD. I love studying exercise and all of its related sciences. This includes biomechanics, biology, physiology, chemistry, physics, neuroscience, dietetics/nutrition, and several other areas. I’m pretty much constantly studying or reading something when I’m not working out, sleeping, or in “leisure” mode.
It would be dishonest for me not to mention my geeky tendencies, however. Aside from my passion for exercise, I am a HUGE movie and video game freak. I’m always quoting films and riffing on my favorites. I’ve been an avid PC gamer for my entire life, and I have no intention of quitting.
I am also, as previously mentioned, a practitioner of martial arts. Officially, I have trained in Taekwondo and Judo. I started training in Taekwondo first when I was 18, and I am currently a 3rd Dan black belt. I’m a long-standing orange belt in Judo , and it’s probably about time for me to get back to regular training and rank up. I’m also a purple belt in Hapkido with plenty more training in my future (hopefully). I have also played around with a few other arts such as Shotokan Karate, Jui-Jitsu, Muay Thai, and Wing Chun, but I claim no serious expertise in any of these. I am always trying to learn more and better myself. Martial arts training has helped me to hold myself to higher standards than I otherwise would, and I am thankful that I decided to train.
I’m also planning on becoming an educator and public advocate for science. It’s something that I think needs to be done, and my enthusiasm draws me toward sharing the awesomeness of science with the world anyway. So it seems only natural 🙂
Anyway, I’ll be adding more information to this page over time as my life continues to evolve. Stay tuned!
